Outdoor activities

Craigclowan is set in a beautiful part of Scotland and is blessed with generous grounds.  We aim to make the most of the world outside the classroom through a wide range of outdoor activities that build confidence and resilience, encourage creativity and problem solving and ensure rosy cheeks and muddy boots!

Pupils have many opportunities to enjoy the local area and are regular visitors to places such as nearby Moncreiffe Hill and Loch Leven.  Pupils in the top three year groups each enjoy a weekend camp of outdoor and adventurous activities further afield in different locations within Scotland during the Summer Term.

Back at home, the children make the most of the varied environments Craigclowan offers within the grounds.  Forest School, Bushcraft and camp-fires take place in the school’s woodland and all sorts of games and activities are played on The Mound, with fabulous views stretching to the Cairngorms.  Green fingered children may take part in Gardening Club and many pupils grow fruit, vegetables or flowers with their form groups in the walled garden.  Some of the garden produce finds its way onto the tables at lunch time; rhubarb crumble is a particular home grown favourite!  We are lucky enough to have an outdoor classroom which is enjoyed in warm weather and the garden also boasts a pond where eager eyes watch out for frogs’ spawn, test out origami paper boats and dip for pond life.

Bushcraft Skills Club

This club, which takes place in our school woods, introduces the next generation of survival enthusiasts to some of the skills needed to help them thrive and enjoy being out in the woods!  Children have a lot of fun learning how to put up shelters of various kinds, use a number of tools safely, including knives, to make items such as tent pegs, turn nettles into string and tea, provide the rest of the group with a hot drink using a storm kettle and light, manage and cook on open fires.

Forest School

Forest School is a hands-on approach to learning that takes place in our own woods within the grounds at Craigclowan throughout the year for all children in Forms 3 and 4.  The programme is designed to be child-led whilst covering a variety of skills and activities.  Children play games, have fun and often get muddy whilst being taught skills relating to staying safe outdoors and using simple tools, as well as gaining a hands-on understanding of issues around sustainability and our environment.

Forest School develops areas such as:

Interpersonal skills

Problem solving

Creativity and innovation

Decision making

Understanding sustainability

Risk management and responsibility

In short, Forest School nurtures skills which cannot readily be measured through exams and tests but are essential to developing confident, successful, resilient, happy, balanced individuals who are able to flourish whatever life brings them.  And, yes, wellington boots and waterproofs are essential!
