Kindness is one of our school values.

And while it seems simplistic and, perhaps, fairly obvious and even naive, it is, in a very real sense, the most important of all the values that we hold so dear.

The problem is, young people (and, in my experience, older people too) do not always get it right.  Understandably, in the heat of the moment, it is easy to prioritise our own needs and neglect the needs of others.  When this happens, kindness can take a back seat and when we notice this it is vital that we address it.

So, this morning, in assembly, we talked about kindness.  I reminded the school that the Oxford English Dictionary defines kindness as the quality of being generous, helpful and caring about other people.  I explained how and why each of these aspects of kindness (generosity, helpfulness and caring) are important.  I also shared with them the words found on our website which say that we wish to be a welcoming, caring and inclusive community where children and adults alike can feel valued and grow in confidence.  We thought in detail about this and the powerful effect that kindness can have on the lives of those around us.

I just hope that this was a timely reminder to us all that kindness really should be a defining aspect of life at Craigclowan and something that we should work hard to develop for the benefit of all in our fabulous, friendly  community.
