Under 13A & Under 11B Boys Hockey: Craigclowan v Fettes

Under 13 A

(07.03.18) Despite the recent wintry spell, we do seem to be truly blessed with decent weather for our hockey fixtures this term.

The Under 13A boys set off to Edinburgh on Wednesday at midday and by the time we got onto the pitch, the temperature was mild, and the sun was out! Fettes had very kindly invited us through to fill the vacant slot following the rearranged Strath Sixes (now sevens!) tournament, which will now be taking place next Wednesday, 14th March.

In preparation for the forthcoming IAPS finals in England, it was agreed to split our normal squad of 13 and play two 7 aside teams. Thanks to Harry C who stepped in as second keeper, and we were good to field two groups. Fettes have also qualified for IAPS, so both schools were delighted to have some practice games.

It was agreed to play a 45-five-minute game split into 15-minute thirds, and finish up with some penalty shoot-out practice.

The loosely speaking A squad (the IAPS team) started off well enough but didn’t quite find their shape in the first third. There was some good play, but it was obvious there was more to come. We managed to find Adam in the D and got one goal in the 15 minutes but found ourselves 3-1 down at the break. A bit of collective chat on how to improve, and we took to the field for the second third. This proved to be much better, and we began to play the hockey that we’re good at. Effective passing with Ross, Harry and Max sweeping round the back and finding our midfield in good positions, and fielding the ball up the wings and into the D. The score line at the next break was 3-2 to Fettes.   The final game was probably our best, and the difference here was the much-improved dynamic leads being run by Theo, Teo and Ferdi. The goal of the season was within a whisper when Archie played a high ball into the D, and Adam got a touch and it deflected off the crossbar. Just! We scored another two however, with a last-minute goal securing a 4-4 draw. All in, it was a most enjoyable match with some very good quality hockey. We then had a practice running penalty shoot-out, and Fettes coach and Scotland player Hamish Imrie very kindly ran the session, offering tips to both the Fettes and Craigclowan boys.

The other Craigclowan side just lost their game, 1-0, but appeared to have a lot of fun too!

It was a great afternoon, and we were very grateful to Fettes for hosting. Thank you also to the visiting support, which was much appreciated.

Goal scorers: Adam A (3), Archie S (1)

Under 11B

The U11 B team, despite creating several scoring opportunities, could not find an equaliser having conceded early in the first half. The lads played some lovely hockey at times, finding plenty of space to attack up the wings. Our final shots all drifted agonisingly past the posts or were thwarted by some last-ditch defending. The boys were happy with their performance and will look to be more clinical in their next outing.

Good effort, lads.
