Under 11 Boys Rugby: Report for the First Half of Autumn Term 2018

It has been a good first half of the term on the rugby field with enormous progress made. With four matches under our belts, we have had mixed fortunes, but the boys can be proud of the improvements that they have made.

The first match against Fettes displayed the natural attacking nature of this group of boys. This was lovely to see. It also, however, illuminated just how much work was necessary on defence and tackling. What was very pleasing was the boys' attitude and the way that they stuck at the task right up until the last whistle.

The second match against Merchiston was a magnificent, very hard fought battle between two exceptionally even sides. It was end to end stuff with Craigclowan coming out with a superb, 11 – 10 win. This is really exactly what we all want to watch in an Under 11 contest.

Dundee High School proved to be a tough match starting late in the day. Both teams flexed their muscles, taking the rules of the height of the tackle to the limit and beyond on a few occasions. With the score tied, the ref. finally blew the whistle. A solid, if scrappy, performance with just about the right result for all concerned. There were certainly lessons learnt that day.

The final match of this half of term was against Ardvreck. Both teams squared up to each other with Ardvreck taking the early advantage. As we realised that we had to up our game we managed to end the first half all square. The second half was end to end stuff but a few more missed tackles on our part allowed Ardvreck to sneak ahead. I hope that we have learnt that every single tackle is vital and a team performance is the only way that victory will be ours in the future.

Well done boys! There are many, many positives from the first half of term. With a lot of hard matches to come, I hope that the intensity in training will be lifted with the realisation that we will only improve with focus and determination.
