Strathallan Sevens Hockey Tournament 2018

The Strath' Sevens, now in line with the IAPS format, proved to be an excellent day of hockey.

Yet again, the conditions were good, and the boys arrived in plenty time to have a decent warm up. The tournament was divided into two pools and our first match was against Strathallan B.

We got well underway early on with this match, and were conscious that goals accumulated may be important when it came to placings later on in the day. We were happy to finish with a 6-0 win. The next game was against Belhaven. We lost a goal early on and had a bit of a wakeup call, but finished up with a 2-1 win. The third pool game of the morning was against Loretto and we knew this would be tough. We remained composed however and matched them goal for goal, ending the game with a 2-2 draw. Our goal difference was greater overall however, and we finished up top of our pool.

Following a very nice lunch provided by Strath, we reconvened for a warm up and team talk. This was the semi-final match and we had drawn with Cargilfield. We played some excellent hockey in this match and confidence grew and grew, finishing up with a 7-0 win to Craigclowan.

The other semi-final of Fettes vs Loretto was a more drawn out affair, going to extra time and then penalties. Fettes came out winners and we were then to play them in the final.

We’d truly found our form by this time and played the best hockey we’ve played all season. Coach Jess Martin commenting that the standard was that of adult hockey. The distribution of the ball and the simple yet highly dynamic hockey paid dividends, and we ended the match with an 8-1 win.

Very special mention to Adam A, who was awarded the tournaments’ ‘most valuable player’. He was outstanding in his goal scoring and the award was hugely deserved.

Each and every boy played their part and this group have developed unto a very accomplished team. Best of luck down at Millfield boys and if you play like you played on Wednesday, you should have some very good games.
