Rugby Match Reports for Week Beginning 11.09.17 (updated 21.09.17)

Under 13A Boys Rugby Craigclowan v Fettes

(13.09.17) The boys took to the Fettes pitch in their first outing of the season against a capable home side. Both sides showed their intentions in attack from the off. There was a great display of support play and some impressive lines being run throughout the opening exchanges, but Fettes were first to score. Another was dotted down and converted by the home team before Craigclowan clawed one back after an excellent break along the side of a ruck. Missed tackles allowed for another Fettes try before the break after Craigclowan had been so close to scoring themselves. Tough to take!

The second half was another exciting one to watch. Fettes scored first, but Craigclowan responded well after some lovely link play from a penalty. Defensive frailty saw the lads concede a try from the ensuing kick-off, but they never gave up for a second. After many phases of play, we grabbed our third try of the day, all three of which were confidently converted. The last laugh, however, went to Fettes, who scored on the stroke of full time.

This was a positive start to the season for the boys in sky blue. The lads have a good eye for attack, but need to work hard to ensure tackles are lower. If we can tighten up the defence, we will worry many teams this season. Special mention goes to captain Adam who scored three impressive tries and always worked to encourage and organise his team. The boys on the whole deserve recognition for their attack, but we will be doing our best to tighten our defence at training before our next challenge.

Under 11 Boys Rugby Craigclwoan v Fettes.

(13.09.17) The boys should be proud of the improvements that they have made since last week. There was certainly some promising direct running and support play which was lovely to see. We do, however, need to use our voices a great deal more to alert the ball carrier. We will have to work very hard over the coming days and weeks to improve our shape and width which was not in evidence yesterday. Against a well organised team which spreads the ball wide, we would have been hard pushed to prevent a flurry of tries. A good start but a great deal still to work on.

Well done to both teams for putting on a visual feast for the supporters.

Craigclowan – 8

Fettes - 3

Under 13B Boys Rugby Craigclowan v Loretto (Away)

(13.09.17) Facing a difficult situation going away to Fettes College with only 10 players, the Craigclowan Bs adopted 3 home players and tried to adjust accordingly. Unfortunately, Fettes opened strongly and two long-range tries from powerful runners set the course for the rest of the half. Despite some dogged resistance, Fettes were able to run in a further 5 tries before the half ended with a 21-0 lead for the home side.

Understandably there were a few heads down at half-time but a number of boys responded brightly in the second period and Max J and Will F, in particular, should be proud of one momentous rucking effort. This spurred the team on to score two tries of their own before Fettes re-asserted their dominance – running in a further five tries as the Craigclowan boys tired. A final score of 39-6 was, perhaps, a little harsh and Oliver W (as well as the aforementioned Max and Will) should be commended for their unstinting efforts.
