Match Report: Under 11 Boys Hockey Craigclowan v Fettes

(12.03.18) The under 11 boys travelled to Fettes on Wednesday for their last match of the term. Here are the team reports:

A Team Report

The boys travelled to Fettes looking to play good attacking hockey considering we had performed well against our hosts at the IAPS Qualifiers earlier in the term. Time and again the ball was taken to the base line and dropped back for a first time shot at goal.  We seemed to want to give the Fettes keeper some shooting practice, rather than playing the ball into the corner of the goals! The boys scored first and surprisingly, this seemed to slow their play down and they started to defend what they had, rather than continuing to run forwards with the ball. This certainly came back to haunt us as Fettes broke away with a couple of lovely team moves and scored two well worked goals in quick succession at the end of the first half.

After half time, the boys seemed much more determined to find a way back into the game and threw everything at the Fettes defence. They won four penalty corners in quick succession, but failed to find the back of the net. The boys tried and tried again to lift our sticks for a big hit, when instead, a quick sweep or strong push would have been a much better option. The missed chances certainly came back to haunt us. As the half progressed we were caught short at the back on several occasions, following slack play and Fettes scored some great goals. The squad definitely relied on their athletic ability today but forgot about the need to use both skill and a calm thinking head in order to make the correct decisions.

Final Result: Fettes won

B Team Report

The U11 B team, despite creating several scoring opportunities, could not find an equaliser having conceded early in the first half. The lads played some lovely hockey at times, finding plenty of space to attack up the wings. Our final shots all drifted agonisingly past the posts or were thwarted by some last-ditch defending. The boys were happy with their performance and will look to be more clinical in their next outing. Good effort, lads.
