Form 6 & 7 Poetry Final 2017

(22.03.17) This morning saw eight finalists from Form 6 and eight from Form 7 giving poised and confident recitals of their chosen poems. The whole school were treated to a wide variety of poets, from Roald Dahl to Rudyard Kipling.

Mrs Prince hard the unenviable task of selecting an overall winner from each Form and, given the high standard, that was not an easy task. She spoke about how difficult it can be to ‘step into the skin’ of a poem that you have not written yourself and also gave the children good advice about how to use silences and pauses just as effectively as intonation and clear diction.

In the end, Will from Form 6 won the final with a recital of ‘The World’s Most Popular Mother’ – I have to say it rather make me reflect on my etiquette when my own children have friends round. Tessa won the Form 7 final with an assured performance of Roald Dahl’s ‘The Pig’, bringing the pig alive with a wonderful accent.

I am so grateful to Mrs Prince for giving up her time to come in and judge and I am immensely proud of all the participants in this year’s poetry competition.
